Xia Junna is one of the newly emerging artists. When she graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China in 1996, her works "Girl on the Ice" was purchased by Chunxia Hanmo Gallery in Beijing in RMB 10,000 yuan. In 1997, the work was sold RMB 30,000 yuan when auctioned at Guard Auction activity. In 1998, the work was bought by one clerk in a bank with RMB 50,0000 yuan. In 1999 the work was resold again; Xia Junna's works at her sole exhi bitions were sold out. Someone even liked to offer RMB 120,000 yuan to buy "Girl on the Ice" but the collector was reluctant to sell. Within five years Xia's works' price was increased tenfold. Xia is only 30 years old that her case is a good example to elucidate how to invest in the young Chinese artists.

Art market is like a growth enterprise market such as NASDAQ which is a high venture and high return investment market. Just because its high venture does the market become very challenging and promising. Firstly, the newly emerging enterprises listed in Nasdaq have showed some "avant-guard" elements so that they can have more and fast growing potentiality in short time; secondly, these enterprises are lack of capital for further development, so they need investment from outside. Because they are new enterprises, investment and entry threshold are quite low. In addition, venture investors are frequently involved in daily management and administration, both of them, investors and enterpreners, bring enterprises into success. Finally, venture investors can retreat from the enterprises by listing them in stock market, or continue owning their shares or involving in management.

But in art market who is the "potential enterprise"? It is undoutedly certain that young artists' works are such potential gold mines. Generally speaking, the young artists being selected for investment are between 25 and 35 years old.

From 25 year-old is the time for the young artists to start independent creation and forming their peculiar style when they graduate from the colleges. After several years of learning in arts schools, young artists turn out to pursue their own road of artistic expression. It is quite common that the graduates, if they go on painting or creating, enter the golden period of artistic creation with two or three years. In this duration they start to explore and form their synchronous by keeping away from the influence exerted by the schools.

Through the history of art we can find the fact that the young artists showed their talents as future masters at such age: Michelangelo, Raffaello, etc completed their masterpieces at twenties; in China, Luo Zhongli created "Father" at school and Chen Yifei painted "Taking hold of President Chamber" at 26. So it is believed that artists become matured in concepts and styles before 35 and if they cannot show more success in artistic achievements, they would not do more than anything. In fact, many important works are completed during such ages. Therefore during the period of 25 to 35 the young artists are active in thinking and energetic in creating works, it is also most possible to produce the masterpieces.

However, it is during this period that young artists live a hardship life without reputation, income, and household, even live at the brink of poverty. Some of them, if their family is well off, can get some support from their relatives; but those from the poor background may experience more hardship, or even stop their artistic career. Some try to look for odd jobs for living but could not put themselves into artistic production. Against such phenomina, there appear art investment to support and sponsor artistic pursuit.

Investment in young artists does not need huge capital as compared to those well-established who will cost much. Since young artists are not so well-known that their works could not be cashed quickly in market. So it needs a long term of process to have returns. More often investors have at least one year cooperation with artists, or three to five years. In such way, investors and artists are in a same boat to bear up to that promise land.
