Material for the press conference of the State Council Information Office Speech at the Press Conference of the State Council Information Office April 18, 2007 Feng Yuan Vice-president China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Ladies and Gentlemen, Good afternoon! Beijing will host the 29th Olympic Games in 2008. As one part of this great event, through artistic creation, Chinese artists will express the hope of the peace-loving Chinese people to be actively involved in building a cooperative and harmonious world, to show our concern for the reality of the public and the whole human society, to show our concern for protecting the cultural ecology and its balanced development, and to wish peaceful coexistence and harmonious development, between individuals, between individual and society, between human beings and the nature, for different people in the world. International cultural exchange could initiate a value orientation guiding the human society to develop soundly, to change and to improve the environment for the survival of human being and culture. Since the reform and opening-up, the Chinese socialist moderation drive has made a great progress and the Chinese society has undertaken profound changes.

The achievement in the field of economy and culture draws attention from the whole world. People get to know and understand more of the Chinese civilization with history of 5000 years. Meanwhile, they are more concerned with the contemporary Chinese culture, more concerned with how China will be more involved into the world and take more responsibilities. The idea of "One World--Exhibition of Chinese artists' painting works about all UN members" came into being and was carried out in such a background.

This exhibition is sponsored by the State Council Information Office, China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC) and the Chinese Artists' Association (CAA), undertaken by the domestic and international liaison departments of CFLAC, the tourist association center of CAA, Wuzhou Media Center and Beijing Meijia Investment Co., Ltd. This exhibition bears the following features: 200 best living artists from China are involved in this great artistic creation. They are nominated by the experts from the art committee of this exhibition, representing three generations of artists the young, the middle-aged and the elder. They are famous respectively for the outstanding achievement, distinctive style and well-versed technique in Chinese art circles. They shall create their works totally in the style of traditional Chinese painting by giving full play of their expertise. In this large-scale exhibition, all the art works are of top quality. It is not only an exhibition rarely seen in recent years with so many top level traditional Chinese painting works, but also a high-standard international art exchange exhibition in the Chinese art history.

In recent years, the exchanges in the field of fine art have been very active, but most of them are exhibition exchanges between China and a certain country. It is a bright and unique idea that we use typical cultural symbols of the 192 countries to be subjects of the painting, such as architecture, landscape scenery, folk-custom, national flower and national bird, which are presented in various styles and forms. It not only enables the exhibition with rich meanings, but also makes it possible that the exhibition coulc provide diverse works.

The exhibition consists of two parts--exhibition at home and at abroad. The exhibition at abroad will be held in the UN general headquarter in New York, the UN branch in Geneva and the capital cities in over 10 countries of the five continents. This will be an opportunity for people from different countries to understand and appreciate Chinese fine art. Large albums of painting in 6 languages will be issued in the meanwhile. The albums have hardback edition and paperback edition, sold at the scene of the exhibition. The albums in hardback edition will be given as gifts to the state leaders, libraries, museums of different countries and delegations participating in the Olympic Games. In addition, we will make efforts to do better publicity work so that this exhibition can make extensive and profound effect. In the process of planning, mobilizing, organizing and carrying out a series of exhibition work, "One World" exhibition has got great support from the department in charge and full cooperation of the related departments. The artists have been actively involved and greatly dedicated to this activity.

The sponsors have provided financial guarantees. Many embassies in China have also offered us help an support. All these factors enabled us to get activity ready only in half a year with heavy tasks and a tight schedule.

This exhibition can be considered as a great event in the Chinese culture and art circles during the Olympic Games, a creative activity in the history of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, an artistic expression for the idea of building a harmonious world, and a good chance and a platform for traditional Chinese painting to display its charm.

The opening ceremony of "One World" -- Exhibition of Chinese artists' painting works about all UN members will be held at the National Arts Museum of China at 16:00 on April 28. At present, the working staff are doing the work of publicity, design, decoration and construction. We believe they will give us a pleasant surprise at the opening ceremony.

The exhibition organizing committee will invite the artists in Beijing and the diplomats of the embassies in China to attend this event. All the works, after being modified according to the ambassadors' suggestions, will be printed and cased up for the exhibitions overseas. Welcome to the exhibition at the National Arts Museum of China. Today the exhibition organizing committee especially selects part of the good Works for display. We also invite ten representative Chinese artists to give you interviews.
