    GBD Art District Phase 1 Architecture Competition

    1   500M3 design
     
    Objective: design a 50m2, 10m high, 500m3 space.
     
    The result: it should provide external open space, guarantee a flexible workspace, and a private living environment. A sample design might include: a public exhibition space on the first floor, a studio space on the second floor, a living space on the third floor, and a private garden or a swimming pool on the roof deck.
     
    Over two hundred 500M3 units will combine to form the GBD Art District Phase 1 Architecture Competition project, to be completed before the 2008 Olympic Games.

    GBD Art District Architecture Phase 1 includes:

    1. Competition project: over two hundred 500M3 artist work and living units that also accommodate business and leisure needs.

    2. Industrial renewal component: auditorium, gallery, movie theater, salon, art organization, design hotel, restaurant, bar, large-scale exhibition hall, open air art park.

    The entire GBD project will be completed in 2010.  

    2   500M3 location

    500M3 Design is located 900m south to east Chang’an Avenue, 0m east to east Fifth Ring Road, 0m north to Guangqu Road.

    500 M3 Design is on the east of the CBD financial district, linked to the west side of Tongzhou. 

    The intersection of east Fifth Ring Road and Guangqu Road will be accessible by car at the end of 2007.   

    3   500M3 site description

    Total area of GBD: 450,000m2
    Total area of GBD Phase 1: 104,000m2
    Total area allotted for the 500m3 units: 15,446m2

    4   500M3 concept

    The GBD Art District Architecture Competition was initiated by Boloni Home Decor, the brand that introduced the culture of Italian furniture to China and planned hand in hand with the Thinking Hands Co., also curators of the Dangdai International Art Festival (DIAF).

    GBD hopes to achieve art for life, art for the people’s rich and happy urban survival.

    We are accepting proposals from all around the world for the 500M3 Design.  

    5   500M3 designers

    We welcome proposals from: architects, artists, designers, and any creative professionals.

    6   500M3 winners

    1. The total prize money is 250, 000RMB divided according to the following categories:
    Gold:       1 winner        150, 000 RMB
    Silver:      1 winner          50, 000 RMB
    Bronze:   5 winners         10, 000 RMB per person

    2.  Designs that do not receive a gold, silver, or bronze prize and are adopted by building owners for usage will receive honorable mention titles. Honorable mention designs will enjoy the following rights described in items 3, 4, and 5.

    3. All winners will have priority leasing of the 500M3 units.

    4. The winning design will be implemented within the 500M3 area (over 200 units). The winner’s name will appear on the façade of the constructed buildings.

    5. Winning designs will exhibit in “Game City,” the 2007 Dangdai International Art Festival (DIAF 2007).

    7   500M3 design requirements

    Please draft a rectangle that is 50m2 and let it grow 10m high!      

    7.1  Parameters

    ◆  Your 500M3 design must abide by the dimensions of the footprints of the dismantled structures, within the designated area to the competition.  

    ◆  Your  500M3 design can not be higher that 10m.

    ◆  Your 500M3 can start underground, as you can sink the ground floor by 1 meter under the street level

    For example:  if a 29mX44.4m structure is dismantled, your 500M3 might resemble:

    7.2   Design requirements

    1. Ratio of length to width? You decide.

    2. How many floors will there be, and will the stairs be inside or outside? You decide.

    3. Entertain the possibility of several 500M3 units assembled together.

    4. If your design involves connected 500M3 units, please consider the framework.

    5. The roof deck can be used, but the total height of the construction should be no more than 10 meters.

    6. You may sink the ground floor by 1 meter below the street level.

    8   500M3 participation and contest submissions

    8.1   Participation

    1. Visit www.artgbd.com to download application form.

    2. Fill out application form.

    3. Draft your 500M3 design. This can either be rendered by hand or with design software.

    4. Requirements:

    - Clarify your concept visually using your medium of choice. Basic floor plans, elevation and 3D perspectives are appreciated.

    - Clarify how modular solutions can be applied throughout the competition area, illustrating what the outcome would be like.

    8.2   Submissions

    1. Present your proposal on either 2 sheets A2 (Portrait) or 4 sheets A3 (landscape), all in PDF.

    2. All your panels must be anonymous.

    3. Mark your panel A,B,C,D in the top right corner to indicate the order.

    4. Project name of your 500M3 should be projected clearly on each of the panel top right corner.

    5. All text must be in both English and Chinese. If hand writing, please make sure to write clearly.

    8.3   Procedures

    1. Email your application form and electronic attachment of your design to artgbd@gmail.com , meanwhile, send your application and the paper version of your design to:

    2. If you use hand rendered design, you must scan your project and email it to us with your application form; you must meanwhile make a copy of your project and mail it to us together with your application form.

    3. Burn the above documents to a CD or a DVD and send it by mail.

    4. All documents must be emailed to artgbd@gmail.com by March 30, 2007. All letters must be received by March 30, 2007. Deadline qualification will be determined by the postmark date, based on Beijing time.

    9   500M3 jury members

    Jury for the competition will include architect Zhu Pei, architect Yi Jiezhong, architect Neville Mars, artist Huang Rui, media personality Hong Huang, GBD founder Cai Ming.

    About the jury members:

    Zhu Pei: architect, Principle of Zhu Pei Architects Firm. won many awards and participated to large scale international art and architecture exhibitions.

    Yi Jiezhong: architect and designer. Executive director of Flamingo Communication.

    Xie Haitao: Deputy Secretary-General of Design Committee of China Constitution and Decoration Union

    Huang Rui: artist and curator, main initiator of 798 Art District.

    Hong Huang: publisher and media personality, CEO of CIMG.

    Cai Ming: general manager of Boloni Home Decor, leader and advocateor of top brand furniture industry.

    10   500M3 judging process

    Winners will be based on an anonymous vote.  
     
    11   500M3 statement

    1. The organizers of this competition reserve the right of unlimited access to the winning designs and the right to alter the winning design based on the needs of the project.

    2. The organizers of this competition reserve the right to use submitted works in competition related promotions, exhibitions, and publications of the Project.

    12   Communication of the winners

    Deliberation of the jury will be publicly announced on April 3, 2007.
