Two years have passed since the foundation of China Shanghai International Arts Festival. With the attraction of a broad spectrum of the arts, an excellent selection of artists and works, a parade of world stars and young talents, the festival built itself into an internationally-acclaimed art brand, which was brilliantly presented in the third edition of festival.

The 3rd China Shanghai International Arts Festival was held from 1 November to 1 December 2001, presenting 61 theatrical works from 25 countries and regions worldwide, including 139 performances. The average rate of tickets sales was as high as 91.16% and 21 of the programs were sold out. More than 230,000 audiences patronized the performances.

The programs at the 3rd festival were full of innovative and creative works. For example, Ballet for Life performed by Bejart Ballet Lausame and modern edition of Romeo & Juliet by Ballet Deutsch Oper am Rhein were vigorous ones worth appreciating. As for the domestic programs, the festival also presented colorful pioneering genius masterworks including Beijing Opera Chinese Imperial Concubine, the Opening Gala Show, the Brilliance of China and the drama, Hurricane.

Eleven exhibitions and expositions were held during the festival. They included the Maya Treasures from Mexico and Exhibition of Collected Works of the State Museum of History & Art of Luxemburg, attracting over 200,000 visitors.

The 1st China Shanghai International Youth Piano Competition, Shanghai International Magic Festival & International Magic Competition 2001 and New Singers (Asia) contest, were new highlights at this festival. Some 80 performance agents from 17 countries and regions took part in the International Art Fair. The Symphony of Water and Fire held in the Century Park in Pudong and a number of public activities including the originally-created daily program of outdoor free shows on Nanjing Road, offered citizens a great opportunity and access to the art festival.
