    A Converstion with Ding Fang

    (abridgement)

Zhu Qi: When you began to paint the works themed on the west China?

Ding Fang: It began at 1980,when I was a freshman in Nanjing Art institute. We traveled to Shannxi and Shanxi, especially the frescos there gave me inspiration. However, when I went to Suzhou,I found I can do nothing in front of beautiful south China's scene.I was born in Shannxi Province, then I have a good feeling toward northern China. As we talking about painting,I put much importance on the background out of the paintings.

Z: As I can see from your paintings, there are no obvious differences between people and nature. They are mixed together.May I say that u draw them unintentionally?

D:You may say that.I went to a small town named Zhen Jing in Shannxi Province.I found people and earth are in the relation of the same construction. The formation and the lines are in a deep connection.for example, the clothes local people wear are made of handwoven material, the drapes on the clothes are just like the lines of mountains there.

Z:I heard that u have studied the religion for a long time, then what do u think the relation between religion and local specialty?

D:I read a lot about the western and Chinse religion. From the point of history of world civilization,China possesss all the conditions to develop a great religion, but I do not know why nothing happens here.

Z: It seems that your works have not entered into the post-modernism,they are still at the beginning of the modernism. What do you think of this?

D:I have studied the post-modernism,and I read many works by the modern ideologists.I think it is very complicated. Now I am painting a work which I think is the symbolism. It are enriched in the long history of China.

Z: You left art circle for six or seven years, then u come back. You call this period a somnambulism.

D: During such period I running some projects about indoor and outdoor envirament.Actually speaking,I am quite interested in enviramental arts and architecture.I such the experiences are very good to my later development.
